Non-optimal levels of a reducible mod l modular representation

Abstract

Let 5\ell \geq 5 be a prime and let NN be a square-free integer prime to \ell. For each prime pp dividing NN, let apa_p be either 11 or 1-1. We give sufficient criteria for the existence of a newform ff of weight 2 for Γ0(N)\Gamma_0(N) such that the mod \ell Galois representation attached to ff is reducible and Upf=apfU_p f = a_p f for primes pp dividing NN. The main techniques used are level raising methods based on an exact sequence due to Ribet.
