Locally elusive classical groups

Group Theory 2017-02-28 v2

Abstract

Let GG be a transitive permutation group of degree nn with point stabiliser HH and let rr be a prime divisor of nn. We say that GG is rr-elusive if it does not contain a derangement of order rr. The problem of determining the rr-elusive primitive groups can be reduced to the almost simple case, and the purpose of this paper is to complete the study of rr-elusivity for almost simple classical groups. Building on our earlier work for geometric actions of classical groups, in this paper we handle the remaining non-geometric actions where HH is almost simple and irreducible. This requires a completely different approach, using tools from the representation theory of quasisimple groups.
