A characterisation of A-simple groups

Abstract

Let AA be an elementary abelian rr-group with rank at least 33 that acts faithfully on the finite rr'-group GG. Assume that GG is AA-simple, so that G=K1××KnG = K_{1} \times\cdots\times K_{n} where K1,,KnK_{1},\ldots,K_{n} is a collection of simple subgroups of GG that is permuted transitively by AA. The purpose of this paper is to characterize GG and the collection of fixed point subgroups {CG(a)    aA#}\{ C_{G}(a) \;|\; a \in A^{\#} \}. An application of this result will be a new proof of McBride's Nonsolvable Signalizer Functor Theorem.
