Linear characters of Sylow subgroups of symmetric groups

Abstract

Let pp be any prime. Let PnP_n be a Sylow pp-subgroup of the symmetric group SnS_n. Let ϕ\phi and ψ\psi be linear characters of PnP_n and let NN be the normaliser of PnP_n in SnS_n. In this article we show that the inductions of ϕ\phi and ψ\psi to SnS_n are equal if, and only if, ϕ\phi and ψ\psi are NN--conjugate. This is an analogue for symmetric groups of a result of Navarro for pp-solvable groups.
