Leaper Embeddings

Abstract

A leaper is a chess piece which generalises the knight. Given nn and a (p,q)(p, q)-leaper LL, we study the greatest mm such that the m×mm \times m grid graph can be embedded into the n×nn \times n leaper graph of LL. We can assume that pp and qq are relatively prime. We show that mnm \approx n when pp and qq are of opposite parities and mn/2m \approx n/2 otherwise. The latter case is substantially more difficult. The proof involves certain combinatorial-geometric results on the chords of connected figures which might be of independent interest.
