Induced planar Tur\'an numbers

Combinatorics 2026-04-29 v1

Abstract

The planar Tur\'a number of a graph FF is the maximum number of edges an nn-vertex FF-free planar graph can have. We study the case where FF is forbidden as an induced subgraph, thereby introducing the induced planar Tur\'a numbers. We will determine a sharp upper bound when FF is Θ4\Theta_4, a 44-cycle with a diagonal edge, and obtain exact extremal values in case FF is a path PkP_k on kk vertices, for k=3,4k=3,4 and 55.
