How to recover a permutation group amidst errors

Statistics Theory 2026-03-02 v1 Group Theory Statistics Theory

Abstract

We consider the problem of recovering a permutation group GSnG \leq S_n from an error-prone sampling process XX. We model XX as an SnS_n-valued random variable, defined as a mixture of the uniform distributions on GG and SnS_n . Our suite of tools recovers properties of GG from XX and bolsters our main method for recovering GG itself. Our algorithms are motivated by the numerical computation of monodromy groups, a setting where such error-prone sampling procedures occur organically.
