Excluded minors are almost fragile

Combinatorics 2021-02-04 v2

Abstract

Let MM be an excluded minor for the class of P\mathbb{P}-representable matroids for some partial field P\mathbb P, and let NN be a 33-connected strong P\mathbb{P}-stabilizer that is non-binary. We prove that either MM is bounded relative to NN, or, up to replacing MM by a Δ\Delta-YY-equivalent excluded minor, we can choose a pair of elements {a,b}\{a,b\} such that either M\{a,b}M\backslash \{a,b\} is NN-fragile, or M\{a,b}M^* \backslash \{a,b\} is NN^*-fragile.
