Detecting completeness from ext-vanishing

Commutative Algebra 2007-05-23 v2 Rings and Algebras

Abstract

Motivated by work of C. U. Jensen, R.-O. Buchweitz, and H. Flenner, we prove the following result. Let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring and aa an ideal in the Jacobson radical of RR. Let R^a\hat{R}^a be the aa-adic completion of RR. If MM is a finitely generated RR-module such that \extRi(R^a,M)=0\ext^i_R(\hat{R}^a,M)=0 for all i0i\neq 0, then MM is aa-adically complete.
