Descent on superelliptic curves

Number Theory 2012-05-16 v5

Abstract

We are concerned with the question of determining the set C(Q)C(\mathbb{Q}), where CC is a curve defined by an equation of the form yq=f(x)y^q=f(x), where qq is an odd prime and ff is a polynomial defined over Q\mathbb{Q}. This question can often be answered using a set which encapsulates information about local solubility of a particular collection of covers of CC. We define this set and show how to compute it.
