Character formula for conjugacy classes in a coset

Abstract

Let GG be a finite group and N<GN<G a normal subgroup with G/NG/N abelian. We show how the conjugacy classes of GG in a given coset qNqN relate to the irreducible characters of GG that are not identically 00 on qNqN. We describe several consequences. In particular, we deduce that when G/NG/N is cyclic generated by qq, the number of irreducible characters of NN that extend to GG is the number of conjugacy classes of GG in qNqN.
