Ample Line Bundles on Blown Up Surfaces

Abstract

Given a smooth complex projective surface SS and an ample divisor HH on SS, consider the blow up of SS along kk points in general position. Let HH' be the pullback of HH and E1,...,EkE_1,..., E_k be the exceptional divisors. We show that L=nHE1...EkL = nH' -E_1 - ... -E_k is ample if and only if L2L^2 is positive provided the integer nn is at least 3.
