Abstract

Let k2k\ge 2. We prove that the characteristic sequence of a regular language over a kk-letter alphabet is kk-automatic. More generally, if t2t\ge 2 and t,kt,k are multiplicatively dependent, we show that the characteristic sequence of a regular language over a tt-letter alphabet is kk-automatic.
