The exceptional Hall numbers

Group Theory 2024-08-07 v1

Abstract

A positive integer mm is called a Hall number if any finite group of order precisely divisible by mm has a Hall subgroup of order mm. We prove that, except for the obvious examples, the three integers 1212, 2424 and 6060 are the only Hall numbers, solving a problem proposed by Jiping Zhang.
