Simple polynomial equations over (mxm)-matrices

Abstract

Let mm be any integer 3\geq 3. We consider the polynomial equation Xn+an1Xn1++a1X+a0I=O,X^n + a_{n-1}\cdot X^{n-1} + \dots + a_1 \cdot X + a_0 \cdot I = O, over (m×m)(m \times m)-matrices XX with the real entries, where II is the identity matrix, OO is the null matrix, aiRa_i \in \mathbb R for each ii and n1n \geq 1. We discuss its solution set SS supplied with the natural Euclidean topology. In particular, we describe the solution set SS for m=3m=3 and calculate its dimension.
