Revisiting the hypertriton lifetime puzzle

Abstract

Conflicting values of the hypertriton (Λ3_{\Lambda}^{3}H) lifetime were extracted in recent relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments. The ALICE Collaboration's reported Λ3_{\Lambda}^{3}H lifetime τ(Λ3\tau(_{\Lambda}^{3}H) is compatible within measurement uncertainties with the free Λ\Lambda lifetime τΛ\tau_{\Lambda}, as naively expected for a loosely bound Λ\Lambda hyperon in Λ3_{\Lambda}^{3}H, whereas STAR's reported range of τ(Λ3\tau(_{\Lambda}^{3}H) values is considerably shorter: τSTAR(Λ3\tau_{\rm STAR}(_{\Lambda}^{3}H)\sim(0.4-0.7)τΛ\tau_{\Lambda}. This Λ3_{\Lambda}^{3}H lifetime puzzle is revisited theoretically using Λ3_{\Lambda}^{3}H three-body wavefunctions generated in a chiral effective field theory approach to calculate the decay rate Γ(Λ3\Gamma(_{\Lambda}^{3}H3\,\to ^3He+π\,+\pi^-). Significant but opposing contributions arise from ΣNN\Sigma NN admixtures in Λ3_{\Lambda}^{3}H and from π\pi^--3^3He final-state interaction. Evaluating the inclusive π\pi^- decay rate Γπ(Λ3\Gamma_{\pi^-}(_{\Lambda}^{3}H) via a branching ratio Γ(Λ3\Gamma(_{\Lambda}^{3}H3\,\to ^{3}He+π)/Γπ(Λ3\pi^-)/\Gamma_{\pi^-}(_{\Lambda}^{3}H) determined in helium bubble-chamber experiments, and adding Γπ0(Λ3\Gamma_{\pi^0}(_{\Lambda}^{3}H) through the ΔI=12\Delta I=\frac{1}{2} rule, we derive τ(Λ3\tau(_{\Lambda}^{3}H) assuming several different values of the Λ\Lambda separation energy BΛ(Λ3B_{\Lambda}(_{\Lambda}^{3}H). It is concluded that each of ALICE and STAR reported τ(Λ3\tau(_{\Lambda}^{3}H) intervals implies its own constraint on BΛ(Λ3B_{\Lambda}(_{\Lambda}^{3}H): BΛ0.1B_{\Lambda}\lesssim 0.1 MeV for ALICE, BΛ0.2B_{\Lambda}\gtrsim 0.2 MeV for STAR.
