Representing Sets with Sums of Triangular Numbers

Number Theory 2009-09-15 v1

Abstract

We investigate here sums of triangular numbers f(x):=ibiTxif(x):=\sum_i b_i T_{x_i} where TnT_n is the nn-th triangular number. We show that for a set of positive integers SS there is a finite subset S0S_0 such that ff represents SS if and only if ff represents S0S_0. However, computationally determining S0S_0 is ineffective for many choices of SS. We give an explicit and efficient algorithm to determine the set S0S_0 under certain Generalized Riemann Hypotheses, and implement the algorithm to determine S0S_0 when SS is the set of all odd integers.
