On Heisenberg groups

Abstract

It is known that an abelian group AA and a 22-cocycle c:A×ACc:A \times A \to C yield a group H(A,C,c){\mathscr{H}}(A,C,c) which we call a Heisenberg group. This group, a central extension of AA, is the archetype of a class~22 nilpotent group. In this note, we prove that under mild conditions, any class~22 nilpotent group GG is equivalent as an extension of G/[G,G]G/[G,G] to a Heisenberg group H(G/[G,G],[G,G],c){\mathscr{H}}(G/[G,G], [G,G], c') whose 22-cocycle cc' is bimultiplicative.
