Generic surface homeomorphisms are almost continuum-wise expansive

Abstract

We show that for a compact surface without boundary MM the set of cw-expansive homeomorphisms is dense in the set of all the homeomorphisms of MM with respect to the C0C^0 topology. After this we show that for a generic homeomorphism ff of MM it holds that: for all ϵ>0\epsilon>0 there is a cw-expansive homeomorphism gg of MM which is ϵ\epsilon-close to ff and is semiconjugate to ff; moreover, if π ⁣:MM\pi\colon M\to M is this semiconjugacy then π1(x)\pi^{-1}(x) is connected, does not separate MM and has diameter less than ϵ\epsilon for all xMx\in M.
