Finite groups of the same type as Suzuki groups

Abstract

For a finite group GG and a positive integer nn, let G(n)G(n) be the set of all elements in GG such that xn=1x^{n}=1. The groups GG and HH are said to be of the same (order) type if G(n)=H(n)G(n)=H(n), for all nn. The main aim of this paper is to show that if GG is a finite group of the same type as Suzuki groups Sz(q)Sz(q), where q=22m+18q=2^{2m+1}\geq 8, then GG is isomorphic to Sz(q)Sz(q). This addresses the well-known J. G. Thompson's problem (1987) for simple groups.
