Finding a Curve in a Point Set

Computational Geometry 2014-05-06 v1 Data Structures and Algorithms

Abstract

Let PP be a polygonal curve in RD\mathbb{R}^D of length nn, and SS be a point set of size kk. The Curve/Point Set Matching problem consists of finding a polygonal curve QQ on SS such that its Fr\'echet distance from PP is less than a given ε\varepsilon. In this paper, we consider this problem with the added freedom to transform the input curve PP by translating it, rotating it, or applying an arbitrary affine transform. We present exact and approximation algorithms for several variations of this problem.
