Distal higher rank lattice actions on surfaces

Let $\Gamma$ be a lattice in ${\rm SL}(n, \mathbb R)$ with $n\geq 3$ and $\mathcal S$ be a closed surface. Then $\Gamma$ has no distal minimal action on $\mathcal S$.
