An application of Bertini Theorem

Algebraic Geometry 2020-02-11 v3

Abstract

Given an irreducible variety XX over a finite field, the density of hypersurfaces of varying degree dd intersecting XX in an irreducible subvariety is 11, by a result of Charles and Poonen. In this note, we analyse the situation fixing d=1d=1 and extend the base field instead of the degree dd. We compute the probability that a random linear subspace of the right dimension intersects XX in a given number of points.
