An amalgamated duplication of a ring along an ideal: the basic properties

Commutative Algebra 2007-06-13 v2

Abstract

We introduce a new general construction, denoted by R\JoinER\JoinE, called the amalgamated duplication of a ring RR along an RR--module EE, that we assume to be an ideal in some overring of RR. (Note that, when E2=0E^2 =0, R\JoinER\JoinE coincides with the Nagata's idealization RER\ltimes E.) After discussing the main properties of the amalgamated duplication R\JoinER\JoinE in relation with pullback--type constructions, we restrict our investigation to the study of R\JoinER\JoinE when EE is an ideal of RR. Special attention is devoted to the ideal-theoretic properties of R\JoinER\JoinE and to the topological structure of its prime spectrum.
