A simple polynomial for a transposition over finite fields

Commutative Algebra 2023-12-15 v1

Abstract

Let q>2q>2, and let aa and bb be two elements of the finite field Fq\mathbb{F}_q with a0a\ne 0. Carlitz represented the transposition (0a)(0a) by a polynomial of degree (q2)3(q-2)^3. In this note, we represent the transposition (ab)(ab) by a polynomial of degree q2q-2. Also, we use this polynomial to construct polynomials that represent permutations of finite local rings with residue field Fq\mathbb{F}_q.
