Using an under-relaxed cooling algorithm we investigated the vacuum in the $2d\ O(3)$ model and $4d$ pure gauge $SU(2)$. We calibrated the amount of cooling performed to have similar physical effect at different lattice spacings.

We study the topological structure of the SU(2) vacuum at zero temperature: topological susceptibility, size, shape and distance distributions of the instantons. We use a cooling algorithm based on an improved action with scale invariant…

We develop a cooling method controlled by a physical cooling radius that defines a scale below which fluctuations are smoothed out while leaving physics unchanged at all larger scales. We apply this method to study topological properties of…

Lattice artefacts are used, through modified lattice actions, as a tool to find the largest instantons in a toroidal geometry [0,L]^3X[0,T] for T to infinity. It is conjectured that the largest instanton is associated with tunnelling…

By looking at cooled configurations on the lattice, we study the presence of peaks in the action density, or its electric and magnetic components, in the SU(2) gauge vacuum. The peaks are seen to be of instanton-like nature and their number…

The dynamics of instantons and anti-instantons in lattice QCD can be studied by analysing the action and topological charge of configurations as they approach a self-dual or anti-self-dual state, i.e. a state in which S/S_0=|Q|. We use…

We use epsilon-cooling, adjusting at will the order a^2 corrections to the lattice action, to study the parameter space of instantons in the background of non-trivial holonomy and to determine the presence and nature of constituents with…

The effects of instantons close to the cut-off is studied in four dimensional SU(2) gauge theory with higher order derivative terms in the action. It is found in the framework of the dilute instanton gas approximation that the convergence…
