We provide a bound on the maximum degree of the Jones polynomial of any positive link with second Jones coefficient equal to $\pm 1$. This builds on the result of our previous work, in which we found such a bound for positive fibered links.

We show that the triple-crossing number of any knot is greater or equal to twice its (canonical) genus and we show an even stronger bound in the case of links. As an application we show that this bound is strong enough to obtain the…

We construct an endomorphism of the Khovanov invariant to prove H-thinness and pairing phenomena of the invariants for alternating links. As a consequence, it follows that the Khovanov invariant of an oriented nonsplit alternating link is…

The ribbonlength of a link is a geometric invariant defined as the infimum of the ratio of the length to the width of a folded ribbon realization of the link. In this paper, we prove that if an alternating link admits an alternating diagram…

Kalfagianni and Lee found two-sided bounds for the crosscap number of an alternating link in terms of certain coefficients of the Jones polynomial. We show here that we can find similar two-sided bounds for the crosscap number of Conway…

Among non-alternating knots with $n\le 12$ crossings given in \cite{1} Turaev genus is not known for 191 knot. For 154 of them we show that they are almost alternating, so their Turaev genus is 1.

We prove a Kauffman-Murasugi-Thistlethwaite theorem for alternating links in thickened surfaces. It states that any reduced alternating diagram of a link in a thickened surface has minimal crossing number, and any two reduced alternating…

A classical result states that the determinant of an alternating link is equal to the number of spanning trees in a checkerboard graph of an alternating connected projection of the link. We generalize this result to show that the…

In this paper, we define invariants of links in terms of colorings of link diagrams and prove that these invariants coincide with various notions of widths of links with respect to the standard Morse function. Our formulations are…

A virtual link may be defined as an equivalence class of diagrams, or alternatively as a stable equivalence class of links in thickened surfaces. We prove that a minimal crossing virtual link diagram has minimal genus across representatives…

Let $L$ be a prime alternating link with $n$ crossings. We show that for each fixed $g$, the number of genus $g$ incompressible surfaces in the complement of $L$ is bounded by a polynomial in $n$. Previous bounds were exponential in $n$.

We prove a conjecture of Rozansky's concerning his categorification of the tail of the colored Jones polynomial for an $A$-adequate link. We show that the tail homology groups he constructs are trivial for non $A$-adequate links.

It is well known that the minimum crossing number of an alternating link equals the number of crossings in any reduced alternating link diagram of the link. This remarkable result is an application of the Jones polynomial. In the case of…
