In this paper, we introduce a new concept of {\it strongly keen} for Heegaard splittings, and show that, for any integers $n\geq 2$ and $g\geq 3$, there exists a strongly keen Heegaard splitting of genus $g$ whose Hempel distance is $n$.

We show that for any given closed orientable 3-manifold M with a Heegaard surface of genus g, any positive integers b and n, there exists a knot K in M which admits a (g,b)-bridge splitting of distance greater than n with respect to the…

In this paper, we prove that (1) For any integers $n\geq 1$ and $g\geq 2$, there is a closed 3-manifold $M_{g}^{n}$ which admits a distance $n$ Heegaard splitting of genus $g$ except that the pair of $(g, n)$ is $(2, 1)$. Furthermore,…

We show that every p-fold strictly-cyclic branched covering of a b-bridge link in $S^3$ admits a p-symmetric Heegaard splitting - in the sense of Birman and Hilden - of genus $g=(b-1)(p-1)$. This gives a complete converse of one of the…

Suppose $K$ is a knot in $S^3$ with bridge number $n$ and bridge distance greater than $2n$. We show that there are at most ${2n\choose n}$ distinct minimal genus Heegaard splittings of $S^3\setminus\eta(K)$. These splittings can be divided…

We show that the bridge number of a $t$ bridge knot in $S^3$ with respect to an unknotted genus $t$ surface is bounded below by a function of the distance of the Heegaard splitting induced by the $t$ bridges. It follows that for any natural…

A Heegaard splitting which admits a unique pair of disjoint compression disks on distinct sides is said to be keen weakly reducible. This paper provides an construction of keen weakly reducible Heegaard splittings of arbitrary genus except…

The rectangle condition for a genus $g$ Heegaard splitting of a 3-manifold, defined by Casson and Gordon, provides a sufficient criterion for the Heegaard splitting to be strongly irreducible. However it is unknown whether there exists a…

We construct knots in S^3 with Heegaard splittings of arbitrarily high distance, in any genus. As an application, for any positive integers t and b we find a tunnel number t knot in the three-sphere which has no (t,b)-decomposition.

A graph $G$ of order $nv$ where $n\geq 2$ and $v\geq 2$ is said to be weakly $(n,v)$-clique-partitioned if its vertex set can be decomposed in a unique way into $n$ vertex-disjoint $v$-cliques. It is strongly $(n,v)$-clique-partitioned if…
