We study the normalization of a monomial ideal, and show how to compute its Hilbert function (using Ehrhart polynomials) if the ideal is zero dimensional. A positive lower bound for the second coefficient of the Hilbert polynomial is shown.

Matrix Schubert varieties are the closures of the orbits of $B\times B$ acting on all $n\times n$ matrices, where $B$ is the group of invertible lower triangular matrices. Extending work of Fulton, Knutson and Miller identified a Gr\"obner…

We show that the apolar ideals to the determinant and permanent of a generic matrix, the Pfaffian of a generic skew symmetric matrix and the Hafnian of a generic symmetric matrix are each generated in degree two. In each case we specify the…

We prove the rationality of the Poincar\'e series of multiplier ideals in any dimension and thus extending the main results for surfaces of Galindo and Monserrat and Alberich-Carrami\~nana et al. Our results also hold for Poincar\'e series…

This chapter combines an introduction and research survey about Schubert varieties. The theme is to combinatorially classify their singularities using a family of polynomial ideals generated by determinants.

Let $(R, m)$ be a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring. In this note we prove, in a very elementary way, an upper bound of the first normalized Hilbert coefficient of a $m$-primary ideal $I\subset R$ that improves all known upper…

In a recent paper by Harada, Seceleanu, and \c{S}ega, the Hilbert function, betti table, and graded minimal free resolution of a general principal symmetric ideal are determined when the number of variables in the polynomial ring is…

We relate a classic algebro-geometric degeneration technique, dating at least to [Hodge 1941], to the notion of vertex decompositions of simplicial complexes. The good case is when the degeneration is reduced, and we call this a "geometric…

The diagonal in a product of projective spaces is cut out by the ideal of 2x2-minors of a matrix of unknowns. The multigraded Hilbert scheme which classifies its degenerations has a unique Borel-fixed ideal. This Hilbert scheme is generally…

We introduce the multigraded Hilbert scheme, which parametrizes all homogeneous ideals with fixed Hilbert function in a polynomial ring that is graded by any abelian group. Our construction is widely applicable, it provides explicit…

A chopped ideal is obtained from a homogeneous ideal by considering only the generators of a fixed degree. We investigate cases in which the chopped ideal defines the same finite set of points as the original one-dimensional ideal. The…
