Answering some queries of Weiss, we prove that the free product and amenable extensions of sofic groups are sofic as well, and give an example of a finitely generated sofic group that is not residually amenable.

We give the following characterization of sofic (weakly sofic) groups: a group $G$ is sofic (weakly sofic) if and only if any system of equations solvable in any alternating group (any finite group) is solvable over $G$.

We construct the first examples of residually finite non-exact groups. The construction is based on author's earlier construction of groups containing isometrically expanders using a graphical small cancellation.

We consider metric versions of weak soficity, LEF and residual finiteness. The main results of the paper extend Glebsky and Rivera's characterization of weak soficity to the case of normally finitely generated groups with word metrics.…

We give a construction of a family of locally finite residually finite groups with just-infinite C*-algebra. This answers a question from [2]. Additionally, we show that residually finite groups of finite exponent are never just-infinite.

We show that any graph product of residually finite monoids is residually finite. As a special case we obtain that any free product of residually finite monoids is residually finite. The corresponding results for graph products of…

In this paper, we introduce the classes of weakly surjunctive and linearly surjunctive groups which include all sofic groups and more generally all surjunctive groups. We investigate various properties of such groups and establish in…

We provide an infinite family of sofic one-relator groups that are not residually solvable nor residually finite. The proof is essentially different from the one in [1], as it does not require just Magnus' decompositions.

We study the following question: under what conditions extension of one residually nilpotent group by another residually nilpotent group is residually nilpotent? We prove some sufficient conditions under which this extension is residually…

We introduce and systematically study linear sofic groups and linear sofic algebras. This generalizes amenable and LEF groups and algebras. We prove that a group is linear sofic if and only if its group algebra is linear sofic. We show that…

We provide polynomial lower bounds for residual finiteness of residually finite, finitely generated solvable groups that admit infinite order elements in the Fitting subgroup of strict distortion at least exponential. For this class of…

We give a definition of weakly sofic groups (w-sofic groups). Our definition is rather natural extension of the definition of sofic groups where instead of Hamming metric on symmetric groups we use general bi-invariant metrics on finite…

Residual finiteness growth gives an invariant that indicates how well-approximated a finitely generated group is by its finite quotients. We briefly survey the state of the subject. We then improve on the best known upper and lower bounds…

A countable group is residually finite if every nontrivial element can act nontrivially on a finite set. When a group fails to be residually finite, we might want to measure how drastically it fails - it could be that only finitely many…
