We prove that every finite poset has a directed cut with at least one half of the poset's pairwise order relations. The bound is tight. Also, the largest directed cut in a poset can be found in linear time.

In 1981, Kelly showed that planar posets can have arbitrarily large dimension. However, the posets in Kelly's example have bounded Boolean dimension and bounded local dimension, leading naturally to the questions as to whether either…

A queue layout of a graph $G$ consists of a vertex ordering of $G$ and a partition of the edges into so-called queues such that no two edges in the same queue nest, i.e., have their endpoints ordered in an ABBA-pattern. Continuing the…

In this paper, we explore combinatorial properties of the posets associated with Kohnert polynomials. In particular, we determine a sufficient condition guaranteeing when such ``Kohnert posets'' are bounded and two necessary conditions for…

In 1989, Ne\v{s}et\v{r}il and Pudl\'ak posed the following challenging question: Do planar posets have bounded Boolean dimension? We show that every poset with a planar cover graph and a unique minimal element has Boolean dimension at most…

We describe a family of graphs with queue-number at most 4 but unbounded stack-number. This resolves open problems of Heath, Leighton and Rosenberg (1992) and Blankenship and Oporowski (1999).

A poset is (r + s)-free if it does not contain two incomparable chains of size r and s, respectively. We prove that when r and s are at least 2, the First-Fit algorithm partitions every (r + s)-free poset P into at most 8(r-1)(s-1)w chains,…

It is proved that there exist graphs of bounded degree with arbitrarily large queue-number. In particular, for all $\Delta\geq3$ and for all sufficiently large $n$, there is a simple $\Delta$-regular $n$-vertex graph with queue-number at…

A poset is (3+1)-free if it does not contain the disjoint union of chains of length 3 and 1 as an induced subposet. These posets are the subject of the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. Recently, Lewis and Zhang have…

We consider the problem of determining the maximum number of pairs $F\subseteq F'$ in a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ that avoids certain posets $P$ of height 2. We show that for any such $P$ the number of pairs is…
