We prove the Girth Alternative for finitely generated subgroups of PL_o(I). We also prove that a finitely generated subgroup of Homeo(I) which is sufficiently rich with hyperbolic-like elements has infinite girth.

Let $\pi$ be a set of primes containing $2$ and an odd prime $p$. It is proved that if a finite group $G$ has a Hall $\pi$-subgroup $H$, then the non-$p$-soluble length of $G$ is bounded above by the generalized Fitting height of $H$. The…

Let G be a finite solvable group, and let h(G) denote its Fitting height, namely the length of a shortest normal series in G with nilpotent factors. We show, that any law in G has length at least h(G). This result is then used to improve a…

The set of finitely generated subgroups of the group $PL_+(I)$ of orientation-preserving piecewise-linear homeomorphisms of the unit interval includes many important groups, most notably R.~Thompson's group $F$. In this paper we show that…

We investigate subgroups of the group PLo(I) of piecewise-linear, orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the unit interval with finitely many breaks in slope, and also subgroups of Thompson's group F. We find geometric criteria…

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\pi$ be a set of primes. In this paper, we prove a criterion for the existence of a solvable $\pi$-Hall subgroup of $G$, precisely, the group $G$ has a solvable $\pi$-Hall subgroup if, and only if, $G$ has…

We prove that a dense subgroup of $\mathrm{Homeo}_{+}(I)$ is not elementary amenable. We also show that the topological group $\mathrm{Homeo}_{+}(I)$ does not satisfy the Stability of the Generators Property, moreover, any finitely…

We extend a classical theorem of P. Hall that claims that if the index of every maximal subgroup of a finite group $G$ is a prime or the square of a prime, then $G$ is solvable. Precisely, we prove that if one allows, in addition, the…

We construct solvable groups where the only degree of an irreducible character that is a prime power is $1$ and that have arbitrarily large Fitting heights. We will show that we can construct such groups that also have a Sylow tower. We…

We propose a projective version of the celebrated Brauer's Height Zero Conjecture on characters of finite groups and prove it, among other cases, for $p$-solvable groups as well as for (some) quasi-simple groups.
