The geometrisation theorem of 3-manifolds was conjectured by Thurston the 1980s and proved by Perelman in the 2000s. This is an overview on the subject. We explain the content of the theorem and describe its effects in various situations.

We prove foundational results about the set of homomorphisms from a finitely generated group to the collection of all fundamental groups of compact 3-manifolds and answer questions of Reid-Wang-Zhou and Agol-Liu.

We provide descriptions of the Whitehead groups, and the algebraic $K$-theory groups, of the fundamental group of a connected, oriented, closed $3$-manifold in terms of Whitehead groups of their finite subgroups and certain Nil-groups. The…

In this note we describe centralizers of volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms which are homotopic to identity on Seifert fibered and hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Our proof follows the strategy of Damjanovic, Wilkinson and Xu…

We show that if $P$ is a $PD_3$-complex and $g\in\pi_1(P)$ has finite order $>1$ and infinite centraliser then $\pi_1(P)$ retracts onto $Z/2Z\oplus\mathbb{Z}$. If $P$ is an irreducible closed 3-manifold then it follows from the Projective…

In this paper we prove two results, one semi-historical and the other new. The semi-historical result, which goes back to Thurston and Riley, is that the geometrization theorem implies that there is an algorithm for the homeomorphism…

We have proved in [Topology, 45 1 (2006)] that fundamental groups of oriented geometrizable 3-manifolds have a solvable conjugacy problem. We now consider the case of groups of non-oriented geometrizable 3-manifolds in order to conclude…

This paper gives an algebraic conjecture which is shown to be equivalent to Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture for closed, orientable 3-manifolds. It generalizes the Stallings-Jaco theorem which established a similar result for the…

We describe a new approach to the canonical decompositions of 3-manifolds along tori and annuli due to Jaco-Shalen and Johannson (with ideas from Waldhausen) - the so-called JSJ-decomposition theorem. This approach gives an accessible proof…
