We study the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on a manifold. We develop a general theory of implicit generating forms. Our results generalize the classical formulas for generating functions of symplectic twist maps.
We show that if a diffeomorphism of a symplectic manifold $(M^{2n},\omega)$ preserves the form $\omega^{k}$ for $0 < k < n$ and is connected to identity through such diffeomorphisms then it is indeed a symplectomorphism.
We construct a parabolic entire minimal graph $S$ over a finite topology complete Riemannian surface $\Sigma$ of curvature $-1$ and infinite area (thus of non-parabolic conformal type). The vertical projection of this graph yields a…
We study a class of asymptotically entropy-expansive $C^1$ diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting on a compact manifold $M$, that satisfy the specification property. This class includes, in particular, transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms…
We prove that every $C^\infty$-smooth, area preserving diffeomorphism of the closed 2-disk having not more than one periodic point is the uniform limit of periodic $C^\infty$-smooth diffeomorphisms. In particular every smooth irrational…
In this paper we study R-reversible area-preserving maps f on a two-dimensional Riemannian closed manifold M, i.e. diffeomorphisms f such that Ro f=f^{-1}o R where R is an isometric involution on M. We obtain a C1-residual subset where any…
The aim of this paper is to introduce a group containing the mapping class groups of all genus zero surfaces. Roughly speaking, such a group is intended to be a discrete analogue of the diffeomorphism group of the circle. One defines indeed…
This note illustrates the strategy of our paper on piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms by giving a new proof of the finite multiplicity of the maximum entropy measure of Anosov diffeomorphisms (here on surfaces). This approach avoids…
The group of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the two sphere, ${\rm SDiff}(S^2)$, is one of the simplest examples of an infinite dimensional Lie group. It plays a key role in incompressible hydrodynamics and it recently appeared in…
We prove the topological entropy remains constant inside the class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^d$ with simple central bundle (that is, when it decomposes into one dimensional sub-bundles with controlled geometry)…
We show that the identity component of the group of diffeomorphisms of a closed oriented surface of positive genus admits many unbounded quasi-morphisms. As a corollary, we also deduce that this group is not uniformly perfect and its…
For a nonlinear Anosov diffeomorphism of the 2-torus, we present examples of measures so that the group of $\mu$-preserving diffeomorphisms is, up to zero-entropy transformations, cyclic. For families of equilibrium states $\mu$, we…
This paper meticulously revisit and study the flux geometry of any compact oriented manifold $(M; W)$. We generalize several well-known factorization results, exhibit some orbital conditions for the study of flux geometry, give a proof of…
For every compact surface $S$ of finite type (possibly with boundary components but without punctures), we show that when $n$ is sufficiently large there is no lift $\sigma$ of the surface braid group $B_n(S)$ to $\operatorname{Diff}(S,n)$,…
We consider groups of orientation-preserving real analytic diffeomorphisms of the circle which have a finite image under the rotation number function. We show that if such a group is nondiscrete with respect to the $C^1$-topology then it…
We prove that the group of diffeomorphisms of the interval $[0,1]$ contains surface groups whose action on $(0,1)$ has no global fix point, is topologically transitive, and such that only countably many points of the interval $(0,1)$ have…
We prove a number of new results on the large-scale geometry of the $L^p$-metrics on the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of each orientable surface. Our proofs use in a key way the Fulton-MacPherson type compactification of the…
We prove that every endomorphism of the mapping class group of an orientable surface onto a subgroup of finite index is in fact an automorphism.
The (measure-theoretical) entropy of a diffeomorphism along an expanding invariant foliation is the rate of complexity generated by the diffeomorphism along the leaves of the foliation. We prove that this number varies upper…
For a compact smooth manifold $M$ (with boundary) we prove that the topological rank of the diffeomorphism group Diff$_0^k(M)$ is finite for all $k\geq 1$. This extends a result from [2] where the same claim is proved in the special case of…
