In his earlier work, the author introduced a group theory question that arises in the study of iterated Galois groups of post-critically finite quadratic polynomials. In this paper, we prove the first non-trivial results on this question.

An element of a group is said to be reversible if it is conjugate to its inverse. We characterise the reversible elements in the group of diffeomorphisms of the real line, and in the subgroup of order preserving diffeomorphisms.

As it follows from G\"odel's incompleteness theorems, any consistent formal system of axioms and rules of inference should imply a true unprovable statement. Actually, this fundamental principle can be efficiently applicable in…

Given a group $G$ and an endomorphism $\varphi$ of $G$, two elements $x, y \in G$ are said to be $\varphi$-conjugate if $x = gy \varphi(g)^{-1}$ for some $g \in G$. The number of equivalence classes for this relation is the Reidemeister…

We consider several computational problems related to conjugacy between subshifts of finite type, restricted to $k$-block codes: verifying a proposed $k$-block conjugacy, deciding if two shifts admit a $k$-block conjugacy, and reducing the…

For r at least 3, p at least 2, we classify all actions of the groups Diff^r_c(R) and Diff^r_+(S1) by C^p -diffeomorphisms on the line and on the circle. This is the same as describing all nontrivial group homomorphisms between groups of…

This article describes a practical approach for determining the lattice of subgroups U < V < G between given subgroups U and G, provided the total number of such subgroups is not too large. It builds on existing functionality for element…

Let G be a group and H be a Hartley set of G. In this paper, we prove the existence and conjugacy of H-injectors of G and describe the structure of the injectors. As application, some known results are directly followed.

We consider pairs of finitely presented, residually finite groups $u:P\hookrightarrow \Gamma$. We prove that there is no algorithm that, given an arbitrary such pair, can determine whether or not the associated map of profinite completions…

We study conjugacy relations on semigroups and monoids, focusing on the relation $a \cfn b$, defined by the existence of $g,h \in S^1$ such that $ag = gb$, $bh = ha$, $hag = b$, and $gbh = a$. This notion emerged as one that yields…

Let $G$ be one of the finite general linear, unitary, symplectic or orthogonal groups over finite fields of odd order. We find the cardinality of the fibers of the square map at a given generic element. Using this we find the number of real…
