Given a real curve, we study special linear systems called "very special" for which the dimension does not satisfy a Clifford type inequality. We classify all these very special linear systems when the gonality of the curve is small.
We consider linear systems on toric varieties of any dimension, with invariant base points, giving a characterization of special linear systems. We then make a new conjecture for linear systems on rational surfaces.
A linear system of plane curves satisfying multiplicity conditions at points in general position is called special if the dimension is larger than the expected dimension. A (-1) curve is an irreducible curve with self intersection -1 and…
A degeneration of a smooth projective curve to a strongly stable curve gives rise to a specialization map from divisors on curves to divisors on graphs. In this paper we show that this specialization behaves well under the presence of real…
Here we introduce the concept of special effect curve which permits to study, from a different point of view, special linear systems in P^2, i.e. linear system with general multiple base points whose effective dimension is strictly greater…
Inside the symmetric product of a very general curve, we consider the codimension-one subvarieties of symmetric tuples of points imposing exceptional secant conditions on linear series on the curve of fixed degree and dimension. We compute…
Given a linear system in P^n with assigned multiple general points we compute the cohomology groups of its strict transforms via the blow-up of its linear base locus. This leads us to give a new definition of expected dimension of a linear…
We propose a combinatorial method of proving non-specialty of a linear system of curves with multiple points in general positions. As an application we obtain a classification of special linear systems on P1xP1 for which the multiplicities…
All varieties, extremal contractions, singularities are divided on exceptional and non-exceptional ones. Roughly speaking, there are the infinite families of non-exceptional varieties, extremal contractions or singularities and only the…
The geometry of divisors on algebraic curves has been studied extensively over the years. The foundational results of this Brill-Noether theory imply that on a general curve, the spaces parametrizing linear series (of fixed degree and…
We describe all special curves in the parameter space of complex cubic polynomials, that is all algebraic irreducible curves containing infinitely many post-critically finite polynomials. This solves in a strong form a conjecture by Baker…
A detailed study is made of super elliptic curves, namely super Riemann surfaces of genus one considered as algebraic varieties, particularly their relation with their Picard groups. This is the simplest setting in which to study the…
Let S be a smooth algebraic surface satisfying the following property: H^i(\oc_S(C))=0 (i=1,2) for any irreducible and reduced curve C of S. The aim of this paper is to provide a characterization of special linear systems on S which are…
It is expected that a totally invariant divisor of a non-isomorphic endomorphism of the complex projective space is a union of hyperplanes. In this paper, we compute an upper bound for the degree of such a divisor. As a consequence, we…
Let $X$ be a real algebraic variety with set of complex points $X_{\mathbb C}$ and set of real points $X_{\mathbb R}$. A complex slice of $X$ is a transverse intersection of $X_{\mathbb R}$ with a complex subvariety $V$ of $X_{\mathbb C}$.…
We investigate the interplay between linear systems on curves and graphs in the context of specialization of divisors on an arithmetic surface. We also provide some applications of our results to graph theory, arithmetic geometry, and…
We study divisors in the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^n$ at points in general position that are non-special with respect to the notion of linear speciality introduced in [5]. We describe the cohomology groups of their strict transforms via the…
We give a closed formula for the dimension of all linear systems in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with assigned multiplicity at arbitrary collections of points lying on a rational normal curve of degree $n$. In particular we give a purely geometric…
We prove a sharp relative Clifford inequality for relatively special divisors on varieties fibered by curves. It generalizes the classical Clifford inequality about a single curve to a family of curves. It yields a geographical inequality…
In this paper we examine the topology of Brill-Noether varieties associated to real trigonal curves. More precisely, we aim to count the connected components of the real locus of the varieties parametrizing linear systems of degree $d$ and…
