Virtual homology of surgered torus bundles

Abstract

Let MM be a once-punctured torus bundle over S1S^1 with monodromy hh. We show that, under certain hypotheses on hh, "most" Dehn-fillings of MM (in some cases all but finitely many) are virtually Z\mathbb{Z}-representable. We apply our results to show that surgeries on the figure-eight knot with even numerator are virtually Z\mathbb{Z}-representable.
