Vanishing of Degree 3 Cohomological Invariants

Algebraic Geometry 2018-01-04 v2

Abstract

For a complex algebraic variety XX, we show that triviality of the sheaf cohomology group H0(X,H3)H^0(X,\mathcal{H}^3) occurring on the second page of the Bloch-Ogus spectral sequence follows from a condition on the integral Chow group CH2XCH^2X and the integral cohomology group H3(X,Z)H^3(X, Z). In the case that XX is an appropriate approximation to the classifying stack BGBG of a finite pp-group GG, this result states that the group GG has no degree three cohomological invariants. As a corollary we show that the nonabelian groups of order p3p^3 for odd prime pp have no degree three cohomological invariants.
