Abstract

We consider the theory of a higher-derivative (HD) real scalar field ϕ\phi coupled to a complex scalar σ\sigma, the coupling of the ϕ\phi and σ\sigma being given by two types, λσϕσσϕ2\lambda_{\sigma\phi}\sigma^\dagger \sigma\phi^{2} and ξσϕσσ(μϕ)2\xi_{\sigma\phi}\sigma^\dagger \sigma\left(\partial_{\mu}\phi\right)^{2}. We evaluate ϕ\phi one-loop corrections δV(σ)\delta V(\sigma) to the effective potential of σ\sigma, both the contribution from the positive norm part of ϕ\phi and that from the {\it negative norm part} (ghost). We show that δV(σcl)\delta V(\sigma_{\rm cl}) at σcl\sigma_{\rm cl}\to \infty, where σcl\sigma_{\rm cl} is a classical value of σ\sigma, is positive, implying the stability of δV(σcl)\delta V(\sigma_{\rm cl}) by the HD 1-loop radiative corrections at high energy.
