Unitals with many Baer secants through a fixed point

Abstract

We show that a unital UU in PG(2,q2)\mathrm{PG}(2,q^2) containing a point PP, such that at least q2ϵq^2-\epsilon of the secant lines through PP intersect UU in a Baer subline, is an ovoidal Buekenhout-Metz unital (where ϵ2q\epsilon\approx 2q for qq even and ϵq3/2/2\epsilon\approx q^{3/2}/2 for qq odd).
