The Scale and Tidy Subgroups for Endomorphisms of Totally Disconnected Locally Compact Groups

Group Theory 2013-12-06 v1

Abstract

The scale of an endomorphism, α\alpha, of a totally disconnected, locally compact group GG is the minimum index [α(U):α(U)U][\alpha(U) : \alpha(U)\cap U], for UU a compact, open subgroup of GG. A structural characterization of subgroups at which the minimum is attained is established. This characterization extends the notion of subgroup tidy for α\alpha from previously understood case when α\alpha is an automorphism to the case when α\alpha is merely an endomorphism.
