The Euler Characteristic of Finite Subset Spaces

Abstract

For a topological space XX, the space of finite subsets SubnX\mathrm{Sub}_n X consists of non-empty subsets of XX of cardinality at most nn. We compute the Euler characteristic of SubnX\mathrm{Sub}_n X for any space XX having the homotopy type of a finite CW complex. We obtain the explicit formula χ(SubnX)=i=1n(χ(X)i)\chi(\mathrm{Sub}_n X) = \sum_{i=1}^n \binom{\chi(X)}{i}.
