The condition number of a randomly perturbed matrix

Probability 2007-05-23 v1

Abstract

Let MM be an arbitrary nn by nn matrix. We study the condition number a random perturbation M+NnM+N_n of MM, where NnN_n is a random matrix. It is shown that, under very general conditions on MM and MnM_n, the condition number of M+NnM+N_n is polynomial in nn with very high probability. The main novelty here is that we allow NnN_n to have discrete distribution.
