Abstract

Let Φ\Phi be a subset of the simple roots of a (possibly non-reduced) abstract root system Σ\Sigma, and let λΣ\lambda \in \Sigma. We define the Φ\Phi-string of λ\lambda as the set of elements in Σ{0}\Sigma \cup \{0\} of the form λ+αΦnαα\lambda + \sum_{\alpha \in \Phi} n_\alpha \alpha, where nαn_\alpha is an integer for each αΦ\alpha \in \Phi. This notion can be regarded as some sort of generalization of the classical notion of α\alpha-string, where αΣ\alpha \in \Sigma.
