Abstract
A new type of two phase coexistence in a vibrated granular material is reported, in the limit where energy transfer between the particles and the bottom wall occurs due to discrete collisions. A horizontally homogeneous bed develops inhomogeneities in which a dense and a dilute phase separate and coexist. The dilute region resembles a gas, while the dense region is like a liquid with a velocity distribution very different from a Gaussian.
