Sparse recovery properties of discrete random matrices

Abstract

Motivated by problems from compressed sensing, we determine the threshold behavior of a random n×dn\times d ±1\pm 1 matrix Mn,dM_{n,d} with respect to the property "every ss columns are linearly independent". In particular, we show that for every 0<δ<10<\delta <1 and s=(1δ)ns=(1-\delta)n, if dn1+1/2(1δ)o(1)d\leq n^{1+1/2(1-\delta)-o(1)} then with high probability every ss columns of Mn,dM_{n,d} are linearly independent, and if dn1+1/2(1δ)+o(1)d\geq n^{1+1/2(1-\delta)+o(1)} then with high probability there are some ss linearly dependent columns.
