Smooth Yamabe invariant and surgery

Abstract

We prove a surgery formula for the smooth Yamabe invariant σ(M)\sigma(M) of a compact manifold MM. Assume that NN is obtained from MM by surgery of codimension at least 3. We prove the existence of a positive number Λn\Lambda_n, depending only on the dimension nn of MM, such that σ(N)minσ(M),Λn. \sigma(N) \geq \min{\sigma(M),\Lambda_n}.
