Signs of the Second Coefficients of Hecke Polynomials

Abstract

Let Tm(N,k,χ)T_m(N, k, \chi) be the mm-th Hecke operator of level NN, weight k2k \ge 2, and nebentypus χ\chi, where NN is coprime to mm. We first show that for any given m1m \ge 1, the second coefficient of the characteristic polynomial of Tm(N,k,χ)T_m(N, k, \chi) is nonvanishing for all but finitely many triples (N,k,χ)(N,k,\chi). Furthermore, for χ\chi trivial and any fixed mm, we determine the sign of the second coefficient for all but finitely many pairs (N,k)(N,k). Finally, for χ\chi trivial and m=3,4m=3,4, we compute the sign of the second coefficient for all pairs (N,k)(N,k).
