Separating many words by counting occurrences of factors

Combinatorics 2019-05-20 v1 Formal Languages and Automata Theory

Abstract

For a given language LL, we study the languages XX such that for all distinct words u,vLu, v \in L, there exists a word xXx \in X that appears a different number of times as a factor in uu and in vv. In particular, we are interested in the following question: For which languages LL does there exist a finite language XX satisfying the above condition? We answer this question for all regular languages and for all sets of factors of infinite words.
