Selectively Balancing Unit Vectors

Metric Geometry 2019-12-17 v2 Combinatorics

Abstract

A set UU of unit vectors is selectively balancing if one can find two disjoint subsets U+U^+ and UU^-, not both empty, such that the Euclidean distance between the sum of U+U^+ and the sum of UU^- is smaller than 11. We prove that the minimum number of unit vectors that guarantee a selectively balancing set in Rn\mathbb{R}^n is asymptotically 12nlogn\frac{1}{2} n \log n.
